Lyonel Feininger: Drawings and Watercolors from the Julia Feininger Estate     Mar 29 - May 28, 2011

Moeller Fine Art Berlin is pleased to announce “Lyonel Feininger: Drawings and Watercolors from the Julia Feininger Estate:" fifty drawings and watercolors created between 1909 and 1955. Many of these works will be exhibited for the first time, giving a representative overview of the development and diversity of Lyonel Feininger’s (1871-1956) œuvre. The exhibition will open on March 29 and run through May 28, to coincide with “Feininger at Harvard: Drawings, Watercolors, and Photographs” at the Kupferstichkabinett – Museum of Prints and Drawings in Berlin. The exhibition will then travel to Moeller Fine Art New York from June 27 to October 15, concurrent with the Lyonel Feininger Retrospective at the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York.

A few months before his death, Lyonel Feininger wrote to his friend, art historian, Alois J. Schardt (1889-1955): “There are some things to tell and a lot … to show for trial and error in the working process inexorably continues, and sometimes … after decades of quest you succeed in reaching new limits.” The works in this exhibition encompass five decades of this artistic journey, spanning Feininger’s search for a distinct style at the beginning of the 20th Century to his achievements as Master of Form at the Bauhaus in the 1920s, followed by the artist’s return to his New York birthplace in 1937. This diverse oeuvre, in which motifs from various periods in the artist’s career reemerge, depict ships of the Baltic Sea, atmospheric density of Thuringian villages, mansard rooftops of Parisian Montmartre and saddled roofs in Lüneburg, often populated toiling railway workers and ethereal ghosts of many places. The works, while sometimes geometrical and abstract, sometimes naturalistic, share a common search for the essence of things experienced.

A catalogue, including a detailed chronology, will accompany this selling exhibition.

Since the gallery opened in 1972, Moeller Fine Art has been closely linked to the name of Lyonel Feininger, and is the primary gallery for collectors and institutions seeking to purchase and sell works by the artist. Achim Moeller represents Lyonel Feininger Family Trusts and is Managing Principal of The Lyonel Feininger Project LLC, providing research and expertise concerning works by the artist.
