Deliverance from fear
Western painting has a longstanding relation with religion. Scenes from the bible functioned as beacons for the worthy. they showed methaphorically the path to follow for the ultimate salvation (the day of judgment). Modernism and secularisation made this religious iconography outdated. The underlying fear however still determines our relations with the actual world. Therefore painters continue to inspire their paintings on humans strongest emotions regarding conflict, deterioration and death. They function as beacons of attention and advocate acceptance as the ultimate salvation.
