Brice Marden: Graphite Drawings    Nov 9 - Dec 21, 2013

Opening Reception: Friday, November 8, 2013: 6—8 p.m.

Matthew Marks is pleased to announce Brice Marden: Graphite Drawings, the next exhibition in his gallery at 523 West 24th Street.

This exhibition includes twenty-five of Brice Marden’s seminal early works on paper and is the first exhibition devoted solely to this body of work. The drawings, made between 1962 and 1981, feature luxurious surfaces of graphite and beeswax worked into dense, reflective planes of blacks, whites, and grays. Within these surfaces, Marden reveals the underlying geometries of the rectangle and the grid, a formal strategy that has characterized his work from the 1960s to the present.

The art historian Richard Shiff has written of the early graphite drawings, “Marden’s black reveals its qualities only to those who look and can see its changes…Each area of blackness has its history, its experiential specificity.”

The exhibition is accompanied by a fully illustrated hardcover publication that includes an essay by Paul Galvez, a 1976 interview with the artist by Ed Howard, published here for the first time, and extensive documentation on each works featured in the exhibition.

Brice Marden (born 1938) lives and works in New York. His work was the subject of a 2006 retrospective exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, which traveled to the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and the Hamburger Bahnhof, Berlin. In addition, he has had one-person exhibitions at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York; the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam; and the Tate Gallery, London, among others.

Brice Marden: Graphite Drawings will be on view at 523 West 24th Street, from November 9 through December 21, 2013, Tuesday through Saturday, 10:00 A.M. to 6:00 P.M.
