Matthew Marks is pleased to announce, 100 Drawings and Photographs, the next exhibition in his gallery at 523 West 24th Street.

Organized on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the gallery, the exhibition features a diverse group of works by 100 artists, reflecting the gallery's early history of showing works on paper.

Understood in their broadest definition, the drawings and photographs assembled here range from an 1864 photograph of the forest of Fontainebleau by the little-known French photographer, Constant Alexandre Famin, to a pastel completed earlier this year by Jasper Johns; a 3x5 inch Cezanne figure drawing, to a new 6 1/2 by 10 foot landscape drawing by Ugo Rondinone; a digitally manipulated photograph of the musician Björk by Inez van Lamsweerde, to a small piece by an outsider artist known as the "Philadelphia Wireman," who carefully bound his drawings up with bits of wire so they are barely visible; a recent charcoal on canvas by Gary Hume, to a 1949 sketchbook by Tony Smith.

Highlights of the exhibition include a rare Julia Margaret Cameron photograph made in Sri Lanka towards the end of her life; a self-portrait by Ellsworth Kelly drawn in Paris in 1949; the first collaborative work by Peter Fischli and David Weiss, a set of 10 photographs called Sausage Series; a new painting on paper by Brice Marden; one of the art brut artist Adolph Wolfli's largest and most important drawings; a portrait of Lucien Freud by Walker Evans; and a mescaline drawing by Henri Michaux.

Additional artists in the exhibition include Joseph Beuys, Constantin Brancusi, Joseph Cornell, Henry Darger, James Ensor, Paul Feeley, Lee Friedlander, Katharina Fritsch, Paul Gauguin, Nan Goldin, Roni Horn, Ray Johnson, Roy Lichtenstein, Danny Lyon, Henri Matisse, Cady Noland, Georgia O'Keeffe, Pablo Picasso, Sigmar Polke, Dieter Roth, Henri Rousseau, Jack Smith, Cy Twombly, Weegee, Terry Winters, and Wols.

A fully illustrated catalogue will be published to accompany the exhibition and is available for $40 ppd.

A reception will be held on Friday, November 2nd from 6-8 P.M. at 523 West 24th Street (between 10th and 11th Avenues). The exhibition will remain on view until December 22nd. Hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 10:00 to 6:00 P.M. For further information or photographs, please contact Matthew Israel at (212) 243 0200.
