Water/Nymph
August 2 - September 27, 2013

Reception: Friday, August 2, 2013, 5:00-8:00 pm

Richard Levy Gallery is pleased to present Water/ Nymph, a solo exhibition by multi media artist Eric Tillinghast. Utilizing water as his primary subject, Tillinghast transforms appropriated objects into an aesthetic experience that examines the perceptions of our world’s most fundamental element. For this exhibition, TiIllinghast collected postcards of waterfalls, crashing waves, waterfronts, swimming pools and shorelines and recontextualizes these found images with acrylic paint. Water/Nymph also includes a poetic sculptural installation made of water and cast iron vessels.

From shallow puddles and pools to vast oceanscapes, Tillinghast distills found images and photographs down to quintessential shapes and colors by omitting surrounding environments and leaving only the body of water. These paintings explore the concepts of water being a fluid element and impermanent resource. At the epicenter of life on this planet, water transcends physical states through cultural and historical narratives. Water/Nymph focuses on our various relationships with water, namely how we think about water, and its ever present inclusion in mythology, spirituality and religion.

Eric Tillinghast’s work has been exhibited at prestigious museums around the world including The Galerie der Stadt Mainz Bruckenturm in Mainz, Germany, Rocket in London, P.S. in Amsterdam, and The Center For Contemporary Non-Objective Art in Brussels. His work can be found in the permanent collections of the Albright-Knox Gallery, the John Michael Kohler Art Center in Wisconsin, the Museum of Fine Art in Santa Fe, Portland State University, and the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art in Arizona among others. Although Tillinghast has roots in the southwest, having lived in Santa Fe for many years, he currently lives and works in California.
