Charlotte Perriand
May 4 - June 30, 2007

For about 10 years since 1927, Perriand worked at Le Corbusier studio where she produced furniture made with new materials like stainless steel, aluminum, and glass, bringing in the ¡®machine age¡¯ aesthetics to daily life. In the 1940s, she spent some time in Japan and Vietnam where she was influenced by the calm and simple design senses of the East and as such continuously appeared in her furniture and interior designs. Her designs underlined the total harmony of furniture, interior, and the architecture with the emphasis on the minimal and practical aspects of design. Her designs symbolized the artistic outcome of the new era that combined the craftsmanship, artistic value, and the new technical advances.

During her career of over 75 years, Perriand's designs cover the wide ranges of the 20th century design history of France. Perriand's works are in the collections of numerous world renowned museums and private collectors. Her first retrospective was held at Musee des Arts-Decoratifs in Paris (1985), followed by the exhibition at Design Museum in London (1998), which refocused her importance as an individual designer. Most recently, Centre George Pompidou exhibited her retrospective (2005), presenting the works full of progressive thoughts and uniqueness in design.
