The Michael Kohn Gallery is proud to announce an exhibition of new paintings by New York based artist Mark Innerst. Well-known and admired for his land and cityscapes, Innerst’s work is characterized by a richly painted surface, an architectonic composition, and an exquisitely dreamy sense of realism.

This new body of paintings will include city scapes of street scenes from Naples, as well as New York City scenes and abstractions. Much of the subject matter in Innerst’s work derives from his interest in the various genres of painting: Landscape, Cityscape, Still Life, Figuration and Abstraction. The artist will often repeat a composition in a stylistic range from a tight realism to a loose abstraction, recalling an art historical panoply that includes 19th century Romanticism and contemporary photographic-based work. In all of Innerst’s work the result is the same: A richly painted, nearly jewel-like surface that gives his work a preciousness not found anywhere else in contemporary art.

The artist has exhibited in the 1989 Whitney Museum of American Art Biennial, the 1986 Venice Biennale, the 1985 Guggenheim Museum Exxon National Exhibition, and is included in the permanent collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; Museum of Modern Art, NY; Guggenheim Museum, NY; Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; Walker Art Center, Minneapolis; Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago; and numerous other public and private collections.
