James Kelly Contemporary is pleased to announce a solo exhibition of paintings by Jill Moser. This will be his first solo show with the gallery.

Moser’s mix of rigidly straight and rhythmically gestural strokes on a muted translucent ground represents a virtual tug and pull, a combination of restricted and free-flowing movement. A visual choreography of tension and release, Moser investigates mark making with a sense of restrained improvisation. Her choice of color combinations invigorates the brush strokes that hover above what appears to be the ghostly remnants of marks that didn’t live up to their potential and were relegated to linger in the background.

Her mark making shifts from a childlike freedom to more restrained and contemplative, she combines vivid pigments that accentuate the marks and are used for both the rigid and freeform strokes.

The Exhibition will include ten new paintings in a range of sizes. Moser received her BA from Brown University before pursuing her MFA at Hunter College, NYC. Her work is in numerous public collections including The Museum of Modern Art, NYC; The Metropolitan Museum of Art, NYC; The Art Institute of Chicago; The Fogg Art Museum, Harvard University, and many others.

The artist will be in attendance for the opening at James Kelly Contemporary, on May 13th from 5-7 pm.
