Bernard Jacobson Gallery is delighted to present a group show of work by gallery artists, including new work by William Tillyer and Bruce McLean.
The two new works by celebrated British artist William Tillyer are part of a brand new series of White Relief paintings. Tillyer's experimentation with the picture plane and structure of the canvas - as with some of his Hardware works - is here revisited. In White Relief / Blue Version (2011) Tillyer's signature blend of colours are brought to the forefront of the picture plane and spill over from the canvas onto the supporting wooden structure. The other White Relief (2011) was exhibited this fall at London's Pavilion of Art and Design. Other new works in the show include Bruce McLean's most recent paintings, entitled Waiter excuse me there is a Bruce McLean cut out sculpture in my soup, and Waiter Curator, both completed in 2011.
Pia Fries' 2007 work Lautbach is exemplary of the artist's bold use of colour and weighty application of paint. Having studied under Gerhard Richter (now showing in a major retrospective at Tate Modern) at the Kunstakademie in Düsseldorf where she now lives and works, Fries is part of a new generation of artists grappling with the possibility of abstract painting in the 21st century. Another painter to explore with abstraction and materiality in painting is the Dutch artist Bram Bogart. Noir (2006) is an example of one of his later monochrome paintings, which were the focus of a show here at Bernard Jacobson Gallery this past summer in celebration of his 90th birthday.
Marc Vaux's early work Siren (1959), alongside Robyn Denny's Bind (1965), are two earlier examples of abstraction. Denny's 1965 work was exhibited at the Venice Biennale of the same year, and later was included in his 1973 Tate retrospective. Vaux's 1959 Siren is a vintage work, and stands in stark contrast to his more recent four-panel hard-edged construction, included in last year's New Paintings: Triptychs and Ovals at Bernard Jacobson Gallery. Other early works of note are Ben Nicholson's Greek and Two Circles (1961) and Ivon Hitchens' Trees, Morning (1950s).
The work of pioneering abstract expressionist painter Robert Motherwell is here represented by a major painting, Great Wall of China (1971), as well as various works on paper including The Figure 4 #6 (1967), the Untitled works from the same year, and a series of six works from his Lyric Suite, originally a suite of 565 ink on paper works that he executed in 1965 just before his major retrospective at MOMA New York of the same year. Sixty of these were on display as part of the first exhibition of drawings and paintings on paper by the artist to be held in Britain, Robert Motherwell: Works on paper, which just closed at Bernard Jacobson Gallery in November.
