Hwang Julie: Men Over Flowers (Gangnam Space)    Jun 24 - Jul 11, 2010

HWANG Julie: Men Over Flowers (Solo exhibition)
June 24th – July 11th 2010

People would see flowers in my paintings: Lilies, sunflower, lotus flowers, cacti and other unknown flowers in the world. However, they are alike flowers but unlike flowers at the same time when you closely look into them. Doesn't it look like the life of ourselves who share their water and nutriment while taking them from others or being taken by others to be alive or dead? A flower indicates a room in a skyscraper or a person's room inside his mind. Not being able to live alone leads cities, countries, the world and the universe to be connected with numerous networks, though finally existing alone. I am dreaming of flourishing growth of my plants like those networks in my paintings. As a painter, I am both a careful observer and curious bystander, always looking at the world. People look at my paintings; meanwhile, the eyes in the paintings are looking at them. Within the contact between the eyes inside and outside, there is a tension where I am living enjoying. The flowers' eyes hidden in the pictures are reborn based on how you see them. You could fine them observing, surveillance or warm, and whichever you choose is up to nothing but yourself.
