Elizabeth Harris Gallery is pleased to present flipside, the second solo exhibition of works by Martha Clippinger. The gallery is located at 529 W 20th Street, 6th floor and is open Tuesday through Saturday, 11am - 6 pm. There will be a reception for the artist on Saturday, January 4th from 6-8pm.

Martha Clippinger embraces the inherent imperfections of her materials to create abstract works that have a ‘rough around the edges’ quality and an improvisational aesthetic. Her constructions, composed of off-kilter geometries and irregular symmetries, are sculptural by nature but at heart are the work of a painter.

Color is central to Clippinger’s work. Of her last exhibition, John Yau wrote in Hyperallergic, “Clippinger’s defiant palette of solid colors reminded me of the wacky intuitiveness of kindergarten and Southern outsider art mixed with Josef Albers’ formal intelligence.” In flipside, the artist carries this exploration of color through unexpected juxtapositions of painted wood and other found materials. Recent constructions present the textured colors of fabric, leather, and fur.

Like Froeble blocks, a playful intelligence informs the works’ creation and installation. Though modest in scale, Clippinger’s works engage the wall and surrounding architecture to occupy a space beyond their physical dimensions. The rhythmic hanging of her works in flipside leads the viewer through the gallery in a kind of visual hopscotch.

A similar playfulness is found in the unconventional format of the exhibition catalogue: a card game. Each deck of cards includes images of 13 recent works. The flipside game challenges the viewers’ perception and memory by asking players to observe and remember the location of specific images.

Martha Clippinger grew up in Columbus, Georgia and lives in New York. She received her MFA from Mason Gross School of Art, Rutgers University and her BA in Art History from Fordham University. She has been the recipient of fellowships from the MacDowell Colony, Edward F. Albee Foundation, Atlantic Center for the Arts, and Marie Walsh Sharpe Art Foundation. Her work has been written about in Hyperallergic and The Brooklyn Rail, among other publications. She has shown in numerous exhibitions across the country and is represented by Elizabeth Harris Gallery in New York. As a recent Fulbright-García Robles grantee, Clippinger will live and work in Oaxaca, Mexico for the majority of 2014.
