Hanna Liden 'FALL TEN'    Oct 28 - Dec 20, 2010

Hanna Liden, „FALL TEN“

Galerie Gmurzynska, Zürich,
October 28th to December 20th
Opening
October 28th 2010, 6.30pm - 8.30pm

From October 28th to December 20th, Galerie Gmurzynska presents the exhibition “FALL TEN” by Hanna Liden at its Zurich location.

Born in Stockholm and working in New York for the past decade, Liden has been central to the re-emergence of the downtown scene of New York City. Working mainly in photo based materials, she has created a dynamic and rich oeuvre which explores alternative subcultures with a cinematic eye.

For this exhibition Liden has cast her sights on the tradition of still-life compositions as a vessel for ambiguous notions of the gothic and supernatural. The works can be seen as descendants of both Dutch still life paintings and the breadth of horror cinema, creating haunting images that timelessly exist within romantic notions of the occult. Most works of Hanna Liden, who has grown up in an atheist environment are all about rituals and religion.

Hanna Liden has moved from landscapes and portraits, to a fixation on actual objects as sculpture: Halloweenish moods, spooky works in supernatural contents, demonic looking figures, and esoteric rites are important in Hanna Liden’s work. For example the picture “Blown Out Candles”, a brooding gothic still-life with spray painted black candles, the original white wax smoldering forward, offering only a glimpse of colour. An esoteric ceremony that carries a sense of dark magic.

Liden has been included in numerous important museum shows, including the 2006 Whitney Biennial, “Compulsive“ at the Palais Tokyo (Paris) in 2008, “In a Silent Conversation with Igmar Bergmann” at the Kunstmuseum Thun in 2008, “New York Minute” at the MACRO (Rome) in 2009 and “Fresh Hell: Carte Blanche to Adam Mc. Ewen” opening this month at the Palais Tokyo, Paris.

“FALL TEN” will be Hanna Liden’s first show with Gruzynska and it will be accompanied by a catalogue. An opening reception will be held on October 28th from 6.30pm to 8.30pm. Hanna Liden will be present.
