Athena LaTocha
New Works
January 1st through February 12th, 2014

gallery SENSEI is proud to present a selection of new ink wash paintings by Athena LaTocha. This is the first exhibition of LaTocha’s work at gallery Sensei. All works featured in this exhibition were completed during November 2013 at the Robert Rauschenberg Residency in Captiva, Florida, and includes one of the artist’s largest ink wash paintings to date at a length of 15 feet.

For over the past four years, LaTocha has been working with a reduced palette, developing her images almost exclusively in black and white. Steering away from color, the artist’s strident gesture sharpens and elicits a stronger sense of spatial depth and interest in human scale.

Influenced by the tidal forces of nature and the impact of industrial development upon the earth, LaTocha employs a system based upon intuition, unwieldy tools, and doubt to approach her images. Interested in process and exploration of the unknown, she does not approach her work with preliminary sketches. Instead, LaTocha commits to all investigation within the image itself.

Working aerially with the paper on the floor, LaTocha begins each work with an action—either throwing or pouring prepared ink washes onto the paper. Often rejecting traditional painting and drawing tools, LaTocha uses unorthodox tools such as cracked rocks, concrete bricks, and reclaimed automobile tire shreds (which she picks up off the sides of highways) to move the ink washes across or to cut into the surface.

Athena LaTocha was born in Anchorage, Alaska. She was a recent recipient of the Robert Rauschenberg Residency in Captiva, Florida. Her work has been included in exhibitions at the Smithsonian Institution, Washington, DC; New York State Museum, Albany, NY; International Gallery of Contemporary Art, Anchorage, AK; and Wilmer Jennings Gallery, New York, NY. She is represented in the collections of Stony Brook University, The Chicago Bulls, the Alaska Native Medical Center, and in private collections throughout the U.S. and U.K. The artist lives and works in New York.

*The artist gratefully acknowledges the Rauschenberg Residency/ Robert Rauschenberg Foundation for its generous support in the creation of this work and additionally acknowledges chashama, Inc. for providing the space that led towards its development.
