Diane Rosenstein Fine Art is pleased to announce “Eben Goff: New Sculpture”, an exhibition of ten new works by the Los Angeles artist. New Sculpture presents an array of recent works that continue the artist’s exquisite explorations into material forms, natural processes, and notions of romantic beauty. This is the artist’s first solo exhibition with the gallery and will include Channels, Solids, and Wax Paintings - three distinct forms of work which employ engraved wax, polished metal, carved wood, and pigment to create dimensional objects.
Mr. Goff is influenced by the aesthetics of landscape painting and wilderness and works from the sculptural traditions of Ursula von Rydingsvard and Richard Deacon. In New Sculpture, Goff’s work has two primary modes of performance: containment and habitation.
Beginning with his minimalist Wax Paintings, the artist engages the painting-object as a container, and the variegated and pigmented wax surface as the stage for a material event. Containment is further realized in the artist’s “Channels”: aluminum geometries holding wax pools, analogous to the dynamics of a rivers’ flow through flood channels or the force of living energy coursing through a body.
In the “Solids,” he presents carved wooden volumes etched by pigments that emphasize their exterior dimensions as much as they reflect some interior structure. These wall-mounted sculptures have a presence of portraiture, and incorporate formal elements of early 20th century modernist abstraction. In Solids, form and process are entwined in such a way that the work recites its own history and becomes a figure of time.
Eben Goff holds a BS from Skidmore College (2000) and an MFA from UCLA (2009). A two-time recipient of an Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation Grant (2007, 2009), Goff works on the cusp of the natural and the minimalist, moving between painting and sculpture in exhibitions nationwide. Recently, his sculpture was included in The Black Mirror, a group show curated by James Welling and Diane Rosenstein at DRFA (2013), and NeoNatural curated by Doug Crocco at Steve Turner Contemporary, Los Angeles (2012). His solo exhibition, Batholith Etchings, was shown at Ruth Bachofner Gallery, Santa Monica in 2011. Mr. Goff lives and works in Los Angeles.
Eben Goff: New Sculpture opens Saturday, March 16th with a reception for the artist from 6 – 8pm. The exhibition will be on view through April 13th. Hours are Tues – Saturday, 10am – 6pm.
