The Iranian artist Hossein Edalatkhah’s exhibition in Istanbul is opening up at CDA-Projects at Mýsýr Apt.
Composed of the recent works of the artist who continues to work in Tehran, Istanbul and London, the exhibition titled “Truth or Dare?” is constituted of paintings and statues.
Courageously criticizing, through his art, the current conditions in which he has to struggle in his country as an openly-gay man, the artist has elaborated a very peculiar plastic language with spell-binding juxtapositions.
In the selection densely infused with cultural, symbolic icons from the rich history of Iran, lion figures and mullahs, Safavid floral designs and Persian carpets come together through phallic forms.
Using his sexual attitude as a “beacon” of focus for his art and being a member of a society having demonized its desires, the artist’s works tap right into this problem (for inspiration). Through the works he has created, he achieves his confrontations, as a gay man, with the social structure denying his existence.
Hossein Edalatkhah’s first exhibition in Istanbul can be seen at CDA-Projects between March 16 and April 8.
