Alexi Torres: Harvest of a Waning Moon    Jun 20 - Jul 31, 2013

Unix Gallery is pleased to present Alexi Torres: Harvest of a Waning Moon. The exhibition will be on view at the gallery’s 532 W 24th Street space in New York from June 20th through July 31st, 2013.

Cuban born artist Alexi Torres paints leaves, feathers, and other organic materials to create his works, which depict subjects as diverse as Charles Darwin, Pablo Picasso and an anonymous policeman. Torres reconstructs celebrated images and symbols of classic and modern times by imbuing them with ecological, fragile, and ephemeral elements. Torres sees the art making process as planting an idea and harvesting it. He builds the stretchers, stretches the canvases, and primes them himself. As his ancestors did during the harvest, he starts and finishes each work following the cycle of the waning moon.

This exhibition will include the never before seen We Buy Gold and We Buy Silver series of oil paintings depicting cultural icons such as Andy Warhol, Salvador Dali, and Frida Kahlo on the faces of coins.

Alexi Torres (b. 1979 in Mantanzas, Cuba) attended the Elemental School of Art in Mantanzas, Cuba (1989-1991) and the National School of Arts in Havana, Cuba (1991-1995.) He has had solo exhibitions around the world. His work has also been featured in several group exhibitions and is held in several collections, including those of Will Smith and Oprah Winfrey.

Torres currently lives and works in Atlanta, Georgia and Zancudo, Costa Rica.
