With a sudden change in perspective on life/death and present/future happened to her when she was on the edge of her apartment in New York, Jun Ahn began her endeavor in "Self-portrait" series to capture the invisible moment and to rebuild the hidden structure of the world. In images, her body looks peaceful or aggressive, rather than fearful. It is a certain moment of time that did exist, but which we couldn’t perceive with the naked eye. Photography tells her that what you see is not everything and there is always something beyond.
Martin Kim attempts to be a ‘flaneur’ in order to absorb a relation between physical and social spaces. While his photographic approach explores humanity with as little alteration as possible, it's constantly bound by a certain social interactions. Seizing this irony by camera that represents the appearance of things, his " Lookism" series captures multilayered structure in modern perception of human being. In the underwater series, the water acts as a membrane, allowing the magnified portrayal of transformation and transportation of the subjects to be viewed, and it is both the environment and the main subject.
A reflection enough pressing and honest, but nevertheless philosophical - We would see here a picture of two contemporary youthful minds.
Jun Ahn graduated from Parsons-The New School for Design (MFA in Photography, 2012) and enrolled Ph.D program in Photography of Hongik University. Recently she was reviewed worldwide (in the British Journal of Photography for example), and also selected by South China Morning Post as one of the five artists to watch in 2013.
Jongheon (Martin) Kim graduated from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago (BFA in emphasis on Photography, 2010) and completed MFA in Photography at Pratt Institute in 2012. He participated in Korea International Art Fair (2012) and the exhibition “White labs” (Double solo show) is scheduled as the forthcoming in Milan, Italy.
