VW (VeneKlasen/Werner) is pleased to announce Secondary Evidence of Things Unseen, a group exhibition curated by Clarissa Dalrymple, featuring works by Neil Campbell, Paul Sharits, Ryan Sullivan and Jeffrey Wells. The exhibition opens 12 March and continues through 22 April.
Neil Campbell's large scale renderings of simplified geometric shapes, painted in matte black or fluorescent color directly on the wall, pack an intense perceptual and visceral punch. Guided by intuition, the artist scales and composes his shapes within the architecture of the gallery, heightening the physiological experience of viewing into a near performative act. The artist has spoken of his works as addressing "the electric field of the body" and indeed, these massive paintings move beyond abstraction to evoke aspects of the physical and the spiritual. Neil Campbell was born in 1958 in Saskatchewan and currently lives and works in Vancouver, BC. He has exhibited his work in galleries and institutions worldwide including Blanket Contemporary, Vancouver; Galleria Franco Noero, Turin; Marianne Boesky, New York; Office Baroque, Antwerp; Centre d'art Contemporain, Montreal; The Contemporary Art Gallery, Vancouver; Andrea Rosen Gallery, New York; and Art and Public, Geneva.
American artist Paul Sharits is best known for the works he created during the peak of the Fluxus movement in the 1960s and 1970s. A structuralist by nature, his drawings and experimental films deploy an aggressive abstract formalism to explore relationships between consciousness and perception. He was a pioneer in the use of multiple projectors, film loops and unconventional soundtracks, creating intensely physiological cinematic experiences which border on the hallucinatory. For this exhibition VeneKlasen/Werner is extremely pleased to present T,O,U,C,H,I,N,G (1968), widely considered to be among the artist's best films. Paul Sharits was born in Denver, CO in 1943 and died in Buffalo, NY in 1993. He was an important artist during his lifetime, exhibiting at New York's legendary Bykert Gallery, the Walker Art Center and the Albright-Knox Art Gallery. Posthumously his works have been shown at Greene Naftali Gallery, New York; Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; The Museum of Modern Art, New York; Hirshhorn Museum, Washington D.C.; Centre Pompidou, Paris; and Museum Ludwig, Cologne. Museu Serralves, Porto, will present a full retrospective of the artist in 2012.
Ryan Sullivan's paintings are not strictly concerned with either depiction or abstraction in any conventional sense. Evoking what the artist calls "the resonance of the world" his works are rooted in the alchemy and accident of pure process. For the artist, "letting paint crack, peel, wrinkle, evaporate, congeal, drip, bubble, melt or whatever else is gesture." Ryan Sullivan was born in 1983 and lives and works in New York City. He is exhibiting in Berlin for the first time. A recent graduate of Rhode Island School of Design, his works have been exhibited in galleries in New York and Los Angeles and were prominently featured in the most recent iteration of Greater New York at MoMA/PS 1, Queens.
Jeffrey Wells' subtle, nearly imperceptible video projections focus our gaze on the process of looking itself. His work, which at times incorporates sound installation and performance, is rooted in the notion of a reflexive relationship between object and viewer, questioning how clearly and similarly we see the world and calling into doubt preconceived boundaries between objective and subjective, real and unreal. Jeffrey Wells was born in 1970 and lives and works in Joshua Tree, CA. His videos, installations and performances have been presented in galleries and institutions in Seattle, Los Angeles, Chicago and New York. Secondary Evidence of Things Unseen is his first exhibition in Berlin.
