Take a trip down the rabbit hole and into another world at the JoAnne Artman Gallery. “Through the Looking Glass” will exhibit the uncanny photography of Brooke Shaden as well as the innovative photo-collages of Nadine Boughton. The works of these women are a mix of fact and fantasy that will take you on a journey through the looking glass and deep into their illuminating wonderlands.
Brooke Shaden's work reflects a consistently changing perception of wonderland. Each photograph alludes a mood that is different from the next. She states, “It is my goal in photography to make beautiful that which others find disturbing, to take a simple concept (be it birth, death, or something in between – life) and mold it into something complex and magnetic.”
Brooke Shaden is a fine art photographer living and working in the Los Angeles area. Her passion lies in creating new worlds through photographs. Her vision extends beyond the realm of the camera, creating images that resemble paintings and speak of an era that is not our own. Each image is a story.
Nadine Boughton creates alternate realities with her use of men’s adventure magazines from the 50’s and 60’s amongst the juxtaposition of women’s Better Homes and Garden’s magazines of the same era. Her work then reflects the collision of the two worlds, stating that her intention is “to show how the inner psyche reflects the culture at large.” By taking a peek Through the Looking Glass, Boughton’s art reveals a private look into the cool, insular world of mid-century modern living that glossed over all darkness, and which the heroic male fought off in every corner. “Whether the metaphor is that of bats or whales, this ‘other’ carries not only our deepest fears but our deepest desires. We meet ourselves,” Nadine Boughton.
Nadine Boughton is a collage artist, photographer, poet and teacher. She is a recipient of the “Top 50″ Critical Mass 2011 competition, Photolucida. She was an IRIS lecturer 2012, at The Annenberg Space for Photography, Los Angeles, CA. Boughton grew up in Rochester, NY, under the shadow of George Eastman’s Kodak Tower. She studied photography with Garry Winogrand, and at Visual Studies Workshop, Rochester, NY, and Lesley University Seminars, Cambridge, MA. She currently lives in Gloucester, MA, where she teaches photography, collage and creative writing.
