A Thousand Plateaus Art Space is going to Shanghai to participate in ART 021, the duration of which is Nov.28 - Dec.1, 2013. Participating artists include Wang Chuan, Chen Liangjie, Chen Qiulin, He Gong, Qi Lan, Zhai Liang, Yang Mian, Xiong Yu, Yang Shu, Nicolas Grospierre, etc.

Wang Chuan is one of the most important artist in China’s contemporary art. Since the early 1980s, Wang Chuan has been a representative artist of “Scar Art” on realistic oil paintings Farewell, Little Path and Lucky Survivors. In the mid-1980s, he decidedly abandoned narrative realistic painting and threw himself to the adventure of new ink, as well as began his practices in abstract painting. Thereafter, mainly with oil and acrylic on canvas and ink on paper, he constantly created many abstract paintings; In China's contemporary "abstract" painting scene, Wang Chuan is the most senior and devoted one. In the first edition of ART021, basing on art historical research, we will present Wang Chuan’s abstract oil and ink paintings spanning over 20 years, to find his evolution in art. Among them, the hard-edge abstract oil painting “No.9-1992” is of the series work “Valut of Time”, which was presented in the famous exhibition “China’s New Art, Post-1989” (1992-1993).

Chen Liangjie (b.1971, Chengdu) was graduated from China Academy of Art, Department of Oil Painting. Like many artists born in 1970s, Chen Liangjie’s creations keep paying attention to society; however, unlike many artists of the same generation, in his works, there is no attitude toward reality. In the first edition of ART021, the exhibited work “Childhood in North Korea No.3” is an important work of his solo exhibition being held in A Thousand Plateaus Art Space. Chen Liangjie’s works over the last three years are always created with Media images. If there was some lyrical expression of life experience in Chen Liangjie’s early works, he has almost removed both the emotion elements of painting and the social meaning of photographs. Emotion has been restored into feelings, images have been restored into vision, while among those levels of restoration, painting has gained the nonconvertible authenticity.

Chen Qiulin (1975 born in Yichang City, Hubei Province, now lives and works in Chengdu) is an outstanding artists of China's younger generation, whose works concerned about the social impact of China's political and economic reforms. Chen Qiulin constantly summarizes and visualizes the various conflicts arising from the challenges of modern life to the traditional value system. Her most talked about photography, video and Installation works put forward a strong inquire to the process of social development and ambitions. This time we will present her small-scale installation “Balcony”. This series works were firstly presented in the artist’s solo exhibition “The Garden” (2007) in New York. Her works have also been collected by many important museums, collection organizations and private collectors in America and Europe.

In addition, at ART 021, we will also present selected works of He Gong, Qi Lan, Zhai Liang, Yang Mian, Xiong Yu, Nicolas Grospierre and Yang Shu.

ART021 gathers contemporary art, high-end brands, art researches, talks and seminars on the platform of Shanghai, to promote international cultural and artistic exchange and art sales. The fair has selected over 30 top art galleries at home and abroad, making it one of the most concerned art fair. There will also present theme exhibitions curated by independent curators in the meantime.
