After the reform and opening up, art creation shook off the function of politic al propaganda, taking the expression of personal experience and individual feeling as main purpose. From the individual experience of Scar Art to the self-examination of Chinese culture and art during 85 New Wave, Chinese contemporary art learned much from western world, making the flourishing of new art forms and ideas. Triumph Art Space, through this exhibition, would like to show the various creations and ideals of the early generation of contemporary Chinese art.
Art groups and exhibitions with new ideas and concepts which began to show up from the mid-1980s were numerous, including Zhang Xiaogang, Wang Guangyi, Mao Xuhui, Ding Fang, Ye Yongqing, and many other important artists. They didn't think art is simply copying facts dogmatically, but expression of people's inner world.
In 1990s, Fang Lijun, Yang Shaobin, Zeng Fanzhi, Zhong Biao and other artists of Cynical Realism showed a kind of feeling of boring. It seems that PoPi(ruffian) Art's expression is superficial, but in fact, it is very meaningful sociologically. It is a change of attitude to politics and the recovery after disillusionment of political dream.
Their counterparts, Qi Zhilong, Feng Zhengjie and other artists prefer Vulgar Art. Different from Cynical Realism, Vulgar Art is not so political. Maybe that's because it is a kind of visual accumulation. When personal memory is shocked by foreign culture, new visual accumulation is produced. In such a case, it is love to new culture that artists want to express.
1980s opened artists' idea and concept. Diversified experimental art in the first half of1990s provide abundant images and symbols which give the development of new painting a wonderful environment. Either implication in the Meeting Series of Tang Zhigang or irresponsible illation in Liu Ye's works are all good evidence of artists' ability to use elements, whatever historical or current, formal or informal, native or foreign.
When we look back to works in history of Chinese contemporary art, we can find that individual experience is an important clue. Meanwhile, we can feel the changes of Chinese society and the energy of individuals.
