Chung Sang-Hwa: Process    Nov 28 - Dec 24, 2007

Chung Sang-Hwa PROCESS
Nov. 28 - Dec. 24 2007

Since the 70s, Chung Sang-Hwa has made monochrome paintings with a large number of horizontal and vertical grids. It shares the texture of his 60s Informel-style work – which often displayed organic circles-, but shows a more planned and a systematic approach. Marked by geometric structure, monotone surface, seriality, and arrangement and repetition of similar units, his work shares, moving back beyond the 70s Korean Monochrome Painting, the spirit of American Minimalism. As stressed by Rosalind Krauss, the grid is a pattern adequate to represent rejection of any narrative, the main issue of modern art. The grid’s structure, densely interwoven lines warp and woof, as well recalls the canvas texture. Actually Chung’s Informel work, whether painted or not, unveils the rough surface of a canvas as it is, suggesting his awareness and respect for the canvas itself.
