Hedge is delighted to present the exhibit by Danish ceramic artist Morten Løbner Espersen. 18 new works of his opulently colored cylinders, Vacui, and his most recent adaptation of vessels, Horror Vacui, will be presented.

The neutral form of Espersen’s hand built cylinders are the canvas for his provocative textures and coats which can suggest a volcanic eruption melting down the walls of the vessel. It is the alchemy of the glaze that determines whether the texture is smooth and controlled or chambered and unruly. No matter the treatment, Espersen achieves mastery in each piece that is unequivocally his.

Years of experimentation have culminated in the Horror Vacui, (the fear of empty space), Espersen’s reinterpretation of two historical elements, the container and the ornament. Espersen says, “it is my dive into clay’s incomparable capacity, that I use to create radical, organic, three-dimensional forms still with precision. The form’s obstacle challenges my glazing in a different way, and rewards back to the cylinders.”

Karen Grøn, director at Trapholt Museum in Denmark states, “His work with the glaze holds the vessels together: with virtuosity he allows them to be draped in a flood of different glazes, yet again demonstrating that he is one of Denmark’s most original ceramic artists.”

Espersen is represented in the collections of the Museum of Arts and Design in New York , The National Museum in Stockholm and Beumans van Beuningen in Rotterdam, The Netherlands.

Hedge Gallery is open Tuesday through Friday, 11 am – 6 pm, and Saturday, 11 am – 5 pm
