Hedge is a showcase for decorative arts, furniture, design, and craft of the 20th and 21st centuries. Founded in 2003, its program has expanded to join first-rate contemporary work with significant examples of historical modern design. The new 2,500 sq.-ft. gallery combines adjacent spaces that bring changing, mostly contemporary exhibitions into dialogue with important 20th-century works.

For its premiere exhibition, Hedge is honored to present new sculpture by master glass artist Ritsue Mishima. All That is Solid comprises sixteen works, many of which double as vases, produced in Murano’s venerable Fornace Anfora. Mishima is the only female Japanese artist (and one of few women) welcomed into the guild-like community of Venetian glass artisans; she combines a distinctly contemporary point of view with traditional craft techniques to stunning effect. Eschewing color and formal perfection — hallmarks of traditional Venetian glass — Mishima explores the capacity of colorless glass to evoke natural and otherworldly beings, to capture a sense of time as fleeting, and to modulate light. Her enigmatic objects bind solid, even muscular form to delicate, nuanced surfaces; as an ensemble they demonstrate virtuosity across a theme and its variation.

Hedge Gallery is located at 501 Pacific Avenue, San Francisco, CA 94133.
After December 9, opening hours will be Tuesday through Friday, 11 am – 6 pm, and Saturday, 11 am – 5 pm.
