The Cyzer Gallery and Alon Zakaim Fine Art are proud to present an exhibition by Robert Marc. The works in this new exhibition, executed between 1960 and 1990, have remained hidden from the public eye for 20 years. This joint venture between two renowned West End galleries will unveil the works and make them available to both familiar international connoisseurs and a new UK audience.

Marc’s paintings are rich and complex with a palette and surface quality that warms and harmonises his geometrically constructed planes of colour. With technical and stylistic qualities reminiscent of the Cubists, closer study reveals the artist’s signature motifs and unique style as he explores an infinite variety of abstract cubist shapes, compelling the viewer to see the world through his fractured lens.

As shapes erupt from the centre of the works, powerful blues and vibrant reds are juxtaposed against warmer hues, and static compositions become dynamic; Marc’s enigmatic use of typography sees letters and numbers glide between surfaces. His harmonious compositions favour oblique lines, making use of shadow and highlighting to enhance the paintings’ depth. Fragments of familiar objects act as suggestions of the whole; his paintings evolve the Cubist tradition with a powerful combination of classic, painterly technique and progressive abstract forms.

Born in 1943 in Auxerre, Marc spent his youth in Switzerland before returning to France to study art. An experimental artist, he enjoyed working with diverse media. His inspiration stemmed from the museums of Europe where he was particularly influenced by Malevich and Rodchenko. The eclectic stimulation of Paris in the 1960s was seminal to Marc’s prolific output. He exhibited in France and internationally, including shows in New York and Tokyo, developing a wide following throughout Europe, Japan and the United States until his untimely death in 1993. With a strong record on the secondary market, today Marc’s paintings form part of important private and public collections throughout the world.

The nearest underground stations are Green Park (on the Piccadilly, Jubilee and Victoria lines), Piccadilly Circus (on the Piccadilly and Bakerloo lines) and Bond Street (on the Jubilee and Central lines). The nearest rail station is Charing Cross.
