Amelia Johnson Contemporary is delighted to present “In Her Nature”, a
solo project by Australian artist, Sally Smart at ART HK 12 in May. Smart uses
felt, canvas, silk-screened elements and everyday fabric to create her
large-scale works. “In Her Nature” is a choreographed installation which
makes references to the work of early modernist artist such as Lyubov
Popova and Sonia Delaunay. The installation is composed of individual
works, cut-outs, human figures hybridized with natural elements and
assembled on a pale grid-like pattern of thin architectural lines inspired by
a photograph of Isamu Noguchi’s sculptural stage for a Martha Graham
performance.
Smart’s process-orientated practice includes cutting, collage,
photomontage, staining, sewing, stitching and pinning, all of which have
historical and political associations with the traditional activities of women.
Smart characteristically subverts these hierarchies and her methodology of construction, deconstruction and reconstruction in the installation space are integral to the
conceptual unfolding of her work.
