Tayloe Piggott Gallery is pleased to announce an upcoming solo show of work by internationally-celebrated collage artist Lance Letscher, a new artist to the gallery. “Hard Eye” will present recent paper on board collages by the artist, who has drawn comparisons to modern and contemporary masters including Josef Albers, Piet Mondrian, and James Castle. The show hangs January 31 through March 15, with visitors invited to a reception on Friday February 4th from 5-8pm.

Lance Letscher’s collages engage his viewers with their complex detail and vibrant colors. Drawing from a rich vocabulary of paper sources -- books, record covers, vintage magazines, found letters and diaries – Letscher elicits discovery and ignites our imagination. Albert Mobilio, of Bookforum, writes: “If the Book is doomed, it could have no better funeral director than Austin-based artist Lance Letscher.” The recent body of work presented in this show demonstrates Letscher’s meticulious eye for colors, both bright and subdued, and geometric relationships in his incredulously detailed woven layers of lines and shapes. The beauty lies not only in his energetic compositions but in the details of tiny bits of clever text and hidden parts of images that only appear upon our repeated and close inspection.

Letscher attended the University of Texas where he received both his Bachelor of Fine Arts and his Master of Fine Arts. A full length monograph of his work, Lance Letscher: Collage, was published in 2009 and in 2010 Letscher published a children’s book “The Perfect Machine,” composed of his collaged images and text. Letscher’s work is held in public and private collections around the world and has been reviewed in Art in America, The New York Observer, and Harper’s Magazine, among other publications. Letscher lives and works in Austin, Texas.
