Suzanne Tarasieve est heureuse d’accueillir pour la troisième fois l’artiste américaine
Katherine Bernhardt au LOFT19.
Le titre « Lila dit ça » réfère à un roman dont l’auteur demeure anonyme malgré le succès du livre et
son adaptation cinématographique. La peinture de Katherine Bernhardt est à l’image de l’héroïne
de ce conte érotique, farouche, imprévisible et incandescente.
Dans ses derniers travaux, l’artiste affirme avec une grande liberté son obsession pour les icônes
du monde du show business, de la mode et du Hip-Hop (Kate Moss, Gisele Bündchen, Rihanna…).
Activiste du microcosme artistique new yorkais, nourrie du glamour véhiculé par la presse féminine
(Vogue, ELLE,…), elle y vampirise ses modèles.
Des portraits incisifs, peints dans l’urgence, la touche est énergique et radicale – la couleur
exacerbée, la technique effrénée. L’impact visuel est immédiat, la couverture de magazine
s’incarne dans une représentation malmenée.
À travers son style désinvolte et follement expressif, l’artiste révèle les failles de ses modèles et une
réalité inquiétante. Le star-system dévitalise les idées et la mode, vecteur d’émancipation, procède
désormais à l’uniformisation par le cliché. Percevoir sa vie à travers celle des autres ou par le filtre
biaisé des médias - l’affirmation de soi se perd dans les méandres de la consommation et du désir
de mimétisme.
Les toiles de Katherine Bernhardt agissent comme un miroir nous renvoyant la vacuité des images
qui nous assaillent chaque jour et cette identification excessive qui peut nous caractériser.

Suzanne Tarasieve is proud to welcome for the third time the American artist Katherine
Bernhardt to the LOFT19.
The title "Lila says" refers to a novel whose author remains anonymous, despite the success of the
book and its film adaptation. Katherine Bernhardt's painting is just like the heroine of his erotic tale,
wild, unpredictable and fiery.
In her last works, the artist asserts with great freedom her obsession for the icons of the world of
show business, fashion and Hip-Hop (Kate Moss, Gisele Bündchen, Rihanna…). An activist of New
York's artistic microcosm, nurtured with the glamour conveyed by women's magazines (Vogue,
ELLE,...), she cannibalizes its models.
Incisive portraits, painted with urgency - the touch is energetic and radical, the color heightened,
the technique frenzied. The visual impact is immediate, the magazine's cover turns into a
mistreated representation.
Through her casual and wildly expressive style, the artist reveals the flaws of her models and a
disturbing reality. The star system devitalizes the ideas and fashion, once a vehicle for
emancipation, now leads to standardization through the cliché. Perceiving one's life through the
one of others or through the biased filter of the media - self-assertion gets lost in the maze of
consumerism and the desire of imitation.
The paintings of Katherine Bernhardt act as a mirror returning us the emptiness of the images that
assail us every day and this over-identification that can characterize us.
