Andrei Monastyrski ist, neben Ilya Kabakov, Dimitri Prigov und Vladimir Sorokin eine der zentralen Figuren der Konzeptkunst im spät- und postsowjetischen Russland.
Der Moskauer Konzeptualismus entstand Ende der Sechzigerjahre als inoffizielle künstlerische Praxis im sowjetischen Untergrund, mit Ausflügen auf das Land und Aktionen, die existenzielle Erfahrungen widerspiegelten. Indem sie sich das Interpretationsprivileg, das allein der Kommunistischen Partei zustehen sollte, aneigneten und ironisch transformierten, wurden die Rollen der Kunst, der Künstler und ihr Verhältnis zu den Betrachtern, sowie deren eigene kreative Rolle im Handlungsganzen der Aktionen, befragt. Andrei Monastyrski fasst 1980 rückblickend diesen Sachverhalt kurz zusammen: „In streng ästhetischem Sinne könnte man die (...) Aktionen als Versuche charakterisieren, die Wahrnehmung gewöhnlichen Erscheinens, Verschwindens, Sich-Entfernens, die Wahrnehmung gewöhnlichen Lichts, Klangs und so weiter, ungewöhnlich zu machen.“

Für die Ausstellung in der Charim Galerie hat Andrei Monastyrski diese Gedanken weitergeführt und zeigt eine neu entstandene Serie der „Moskau. Selbstportraits“, Werke aus dem 1996 begonnenen Zyklus „Golden Lines“ sowie Objekte und Videos.

One of the principal subject of this exhibition is the correlation between the reality and the digital technology. It showcases how the detailed physical documentation of the performance of the Collective Actions group in a vast snowbound space can be reduced to a mince data carrier who weighs not more than a gram. Here this physical representation utilizes the digital as a new form of its dwelling place; the digital is compared with an ocean who gives birth to new living forms.

In this series of photographs, 'Moscow. Self-portraits' the traditional space of self portraying is coordinated also by the numbers, taken from their digital file names. This mysterious numbers strangely correlate to dates of the 20th century: 1952, 1961, 1993 etc. - this dates correspond to the past, mostly to pre-digital era, whilst 2015, 2022 (with dinosaurs and Buddhist’s scenery) are addressed to the 21st century, the age of the future. This fixation of a time frame and its relations with an image is the main feature of a digital’s nature.'

The series 'The Golden lines', initiated in 1996, includes the photographs with golden 'spiritual-transport' lines resembling those of a subway map, or rather constellations. However, this 'chains' mostly refer to ancient Chinese diagrams of Dao and its inner alchemy.'
