ART PUBLIC: AI WEIWEI «FIELD» 2010
(Messeplatz, in front of the main entrance hall 2)
An orthogonal scaffold structure, constructed of standardized pipe elements and connections,
occupying a volume of 7 by 7 units square and a single unit high with each unit measuring 1.15m.
The final dimensions being 7.40m x 7.40m x 1.15m (w/l/h).
All parts are made of high grade porcelain bearing classic blue and white floral patterns of the early
Ming Dynasty (1368 - 1644). Seemingly uniform in appearance, each item is the result of careful experimentation
with a traditional method to mimic the regularity and efficiency of modern production techniques.
Although derived from industrial parts such as scaffolds or drainage pipes that are a common sign of urban and
social transformation processes, the elements shape has no purpose, the proportion of the arrangement is neutral and
the dimensions unrelated. Liberated from the forces that are imposed by necessity, the methodical partition of space
becomes a ceremonial exercise that establishes a consciousness for the immediacy of tradition and modernity that is so
characteristic for the artists living environment.
