JACKSONVILLE BEACH: J. Johnson Gallery closes out its twelfth season with a solo exhibition by painter Emilio Perez. The show opens with a public reception with the artist on Friday, May 3 from 6-8 p.m and runs through June 13.

Emilio Perez has developed an innovative form of mark-making utilizing an unusual artistic implement- a sharp X-ACTO knife. When he’s not catching waves on Long Island Beach, he can be found in his Brooklyn studio continuing to evolve his distinct artistic process: a self-described “combination of painting and cutting” (or, more metaphysically, an attempt at “making order out of chaos.”)

He begins with primed wooden panels, spontaneously applying loose, stormy swaths of dark enamel. Perez then covers this base completely with a solid layer of white latex, creating a blank canvas that he tops with acrylic paint in his distinctive chalky yet intense palette. Before the colors cure he uses an X-ACTO knife to slice into the acrylic layer, carving the surface and pulling away tendrils of paint to reveal contrasting colors below.

Perez “draws“ with precision- using a blade rather than a pencil or penachieving sharp, graphic compositions reminiscent of linocuts.. The artist’s unique process results in sharp, undulating currents of color and dynamic lines which call to mind graffiti or swirling ocean waves.

Also included in the exhibition are several paintings on paper and a series of monoprints (created in conjunction with New York City’s Pace Prints.) in the same vein as the artist’s paintings on panel.

Over the last seventeen years Emilio Perez has been recognized for his avantgarde artwork, exhibiting extensively across the United States and internationally in New York, Miami, Houston, Paris, and Berlin. His paintings can be found in corporate collections such as Bank of America and permanent collections including New York’s Albright-Knox Art Gallery, Spain’s Fundación ARCOmadrid, and the Miami Art Museum.

The exhibition of Emilio Perez’s paintings and prints open with a public reception on Friday, May 3 from 6 to 8 p.m. and will remain on view through June 13. Gallery hours are Tuesday through Friday from 10-5 and Saturdays from 1-5. (From mid-June through September the gallery is available by appointment.)
