Hannu Väisänen 'Singing Ray'    Feb 7 - Mar 10, 2013

Welcome to the opening reception in the presence of the artist, Thursday, February 7, 5-7 pm.

Hyoutan Namazu is a Japanese proverb describing the difficulty of catching a catfish in a gourd. Hannu Väisänen’s (born 1951) long-standing interest in Japan and its calligraphy were further deepened following the artist's recent trips to the land of the rising sun. The exhibition at Galerie Forsblom includes experiments with ink, people’s laughing faces, and the bold use of black colour – all of which contain strong references to Japonism, but also demonstrate the adventurous artist’s endless fascination with the new.

The new works still contain Väisänen’s signature characteristics: the recycling of themes, art history, and methods. Long familiar themes, such as Laughter, Mother of all Colours, and Father’s Tears, have been joined by new subjects. In Singing Ray, the artist has integrated his own musical calling with 17th century Dutch still-life subjects.
