Janaina Tschäpe: Shaping Fluid

Opening reception on Friday 24 August from 4.00 - 6.00 pm.
Janaina Tschäpe will be present.

The exhibition Janaina Tschäpe – Shaping Fluid can be seen until 20 October.

The artist Janaina Tschäpe (b. 1973) is fascinated by perception and by that which lies between the physical (i.e. the comprehensible) and the incomprehensible, although her form of expression and field of work are somewhat different from Schlegel’s. Her colourful drawings and paintings of strange biomorphic shapes and organic forms and entities influence the digitally-produced videos and photographs, all of which have a painterly character. The motifs appear familiar, yet are not identifiable. Or, as Anna Krogh puts it in the exhibition catalogue: “The pictures refer to a primeval state, a foundation world that extends beyond the visible. [...] a clash between naturally and culturally-created phenomena that results in mutations and fabrications from a world that underlies the instances of reality. It is like a kind of artistic magic realism gone mad.”

The exhibition Shaping Fluid, with its surreal natural universes, points back to the artist's early work – such as the Botanica photo series shown at her first exhibition at Galleri Bo Bjerggaard back in 2006. Tschäpe was born in Munich to German/Brazilian parents, but in recent years she has been living in Brooklyn, New York. Her works are represented in many museums worldwide, including the National Gallery of Art, Washington, Centre Pompidou, Paris, Reina Sophia, Madrid, the Guggenheim, NY, and Moderna Museet, Stockholm.
