Après l’exposition personnelle «On Ascension» de Yang Jiechang à la galerie en 2008, nous sommes heureux de présenter une exposition en deux volets de l’artiste YANG Jiechang intitulée «Tale of the 11th day» au sein de nos deux espaces parisiens rive gauche et rive droite.
La Galerie Jeanne-Bucher présente une sélection de peintures exceptionnelles des années 90 parmi la série des 100 Layers of Ink. Cette série internationalement connue; exposée pour la première fois dans l’exposition Les Magiciens de la Terre au Centre Georges Pompidou en 1989; sera suivie d’une période de création nettement plus figurative et participative, au cours de laquelle Yang Jiechang s’attache à questionner aussi bien les évènements sociaux et politiques des sociétés actuelles que ceux de sa propre vie d’artiste eurasien œuvrant perpétuellement entre l’Europe et l’Asie.
La toute dernière série d’œuvres exposée à la Galerie Jaeger Bucher, intitulée Stranger than Paradise, s’inscrit dans cette perspective exploratrice et interrogative de notre monde globalisé, mettant en question les notions de contrôle et d’instabilité qui régissent nos systèmes collectifs de vie. Partant du principe que l’authenticité est devenue une denrée rare dans un monde dominé par les médias qui nous font vivre dans un monde irréel et imaginaire, Yang Jiechang imagine un «paysage de retour à la Nature» qu’il situe au Paradis.
En intitulant son exposition Tale of the 11th day (Conte du 11ème jour), Yang Jiechang situe délibérément son paysage paradisiaque comme un prolongement de la 10ème journée du Décaméron de Boccace. Ici, les hommes et les animaux peuvent batifoler en toute liberté afin de rappeler à notre souvenir que l’homme est peut-être un animal évolué mais qu’il est également devenu à présent un animal dénaturé. Omniprésent dans les mythes et légendes, les récits anciens, les disciplines de l’art, les religions, les coutumes, les croyances populaires, l’animal fait partie de l’histoire de l’homme et semble accompagner son développement.
La présentation conjointe de ces deux expositions montrent la capacité de Yang Jiechang à invoquer tour à tour l’autosublimation ou encore la participation active à travers des oeuvres à la fois traditionnelles et totalement ancrées dans leur époque tant au niveau de leur composition que des idées qu’elles véhiculent. Yang Jiechang rejoint fondamentalement les grands lettrés confucéens qui considéraient leurs propres idéaux plus importants que n’importe quel système politique et nous immerge dans un Paradis où toutes les créations de la nature semblent vivrent paisiblement ensemble.
Yang Jiechang a récemment été exposé au Centre d’art de Rennes La Criée de Rennes, et est actuellement exposé au Palazzo Grassi de Venise dans l’exposition intitulée Le Monde vous appartient (jusqu’au 31.12.2011)

Following Yang Jiechang’s solo exhibition “On Ascension” at the gallery in 2008, we are pleased to present this coming autumn a two-part exhibition by the artist entitled “Tale of the 11th day” in our two Paris spaces, left bank and right bank.
The Galerie Jeanne-Bucher will present a selection of exceptional paintings from the 1990s including the 100 Layers of Ink series. This internationally acknowledged series; exhibited for the first time in the exhibition «Les Magiciens de la Terre» at the Pompidou Centre in 1989 ; was followed by a creative period in which his interest switched from contemplation to intervention and participation. Yang Jiechang endeavoured to question both social and political events of today’s societies, as well as those of his own life as a Eurasian artist constantly working between Europe and Asia.
Entitled Stranger than Paradise, the latest series of works to be shown at the gallery Jaeger Bucher, furthers the artist exploration and questioning of our global world, calling into question the notions of control and instability that rule our collective systems of life. Basing his thinking on the idea that, in a media-dominated world where life has become unreal and fictional, authenticity has become a rare commodity, Yang Jiechang imagines “a landscape for a return to Nature” that he locates in Paradise. By calling the exhibition «Tale of the 11th Day», Yang Jiechang deliberately extends the 10th day of Boccaccio’s Decameron with his paradise landscape. Here, people and animals frolic quite freely, reminding us that on the one hand humans may well be animals that have evolved, but that today they have become unnatural. Myths and legends, ancient narratives, the history of art, religion and customs and popular beliefs all relate stories of animals that have been a part of human history, accompanying our development.
The presentation of the two-part exhibition shows Yang Jiechang’s ability to alternately summon forth self-sublimation or active participation through works that are both traditional and yet completely of their time from the point of view of composition and the ideas they convey.
By imagining a 10th Day for Boccaccio’s Decameron, Yang Jiechang has fundamentally gone back to the great Confucian scholars who thought their own ideals more important than any political system. He immerses us in a Paradise where all nature’s creations seem to live together in peace.
Yang Jiechang was exhibited in the Art Center in Rennes La Criée, and is currently exhibited at the Palazzo Grassi in Venice entitled «Le Monde vous appartient (The World Belongs to You)». (through 31.12.2011)
