Artist Reception: November 5/ 6-8PM
Samsøn is pleased to present Craig Drennen's 2nd solo exhibition at the gallery. 'Inhabiting an existing—but abandoned—cultural product like Shakespeare's Timon of Athens', Drennen is staging for us the characters he has depicted so far.
The Mistresses'constitute a marriage of extreme body images and extreme formalism, in the service of an extremely difficult 400-year old play.' These paintings are made from amateur anus photographs submitted Drennen with a reductive black line painted directly onto the wall.
Untitled (The Masquers) was recently included in New Curators, New Ideas at PPOW (NY, NY) by Erin Dziedzic. They appear in a single banquet scene early in the play performing at a feast thrown by Timon, creating a play within the play.
Old Athenian is comprised of a monochrome wall painting with an image of Udo Kier as Dracula from Warhol's 1974 film of the same name.
In the upcoming gallery catalogue, Michelle Grabner writes "folding Timon of Athens in on itself, Drennen is able to create a theatrical vortex in which narrative, author, and style are unmanageable as a traditional plot yet profoundly authentic as a contemporary networked fable."
