Fraenkel Gallery is pleased to present Several Exceptionally Good Recently Acquired Pictures XIX, on view from May 31st through August 11th, 2007.

This is the nineteenth installation of the exhibition known for its eclectic group of artists, some familiar and others unknown. The exhibition provides an opportunity to study a provocative range of photographs that encompasses both flea market finds and historic treasures.

The exhibition includes new and never before seen work by several of the gallery’s primary artists. Among this year’s highlights is Idris Khan’s new, color photograph created by layering images of the fifteen paintings Caravaggio made in the last four years of his life. Richard Misrach’s eerie, large scale photograph of the desert floor will be exhibited as well as an unknown photograph from the series “On the Beach,” for which a book will be published by Aperture later this year. A dazzling new photogram of pansies by Adam Fuss will be included, as well as a rare print of Henri Cartier-Bresson’s Paris, 1932. Also on view will be Garry Winogrand’s timely image of a Central Park peace demonstration from 1970; E.J. Bellocq’s photographs made in a New Orleans brothel circa 1912; a selection of early photographs by Diane Arbus; and a group of recently acquired anonymous photographs.

Several Exceptionally Good Recently Acquired Photographs XIX can be seen concurrently with the exhibition The Book of Shadows.
