Etherton Gallery is excited to present its summer exhibition, Unpacked, a selection of exceptional -- and exceptionally rare -- photography, painting and mixed media that Etherton exhibited at fine art fairs this year. The exhibition opens June 18 and closes August 31, 2013.
Highlights include a rare, oversize Danny Lyon photograph, Memorial Day Run, Milwaukee (1966) from the Bikeriders, made in a limited edition of ten. . In 2012, Lyon, a major American documentary photographer was the subject of a traveling retrospective exhibition, This World Is Not My Home: Danny Lyon Photographs, organized by the Menil Collection in Houston. In May a traveling exhibition of The Bikeriders portfolio organized by Etherton Gallery was named one of the “10 essential shows” at the Contact Photography Festival in Toronto.
Unpacked features important images by Magnum photographer Alex Webb, one of the most innovative photographers working today. Webb makes complex and enigmatic pictures based on the direct observation of ordinary life that transcend established categories such as street photography, photojournalism and fine art photography. Webb’s work was the subject of a travelling exhibition organized by the Aperture Foundation, Alex Webb: The Suffering of Light, Thirty Years of Photographs and was recently featured in the Los Angeles Times.
Vintage and modern prints by Ansel Adams, Manuel Álvarez Bravo, Harry Callahan, Lee Friedlander, Emmet Gowin, Ray K. Metzker, Richard Misrach, Aaron Siskind, and Frederick Sommer put the golden age of American photography front and center – while mixed media by Kate Breakey, Holly Roberts, Chris Rush, Mayme Kratz, James Reed, Ed Musante, Alice Leora Briggs and Nick Georgiou give equal play to the best contemporary Southwestern art being produced today.
