Ghost of a Dream: Forever, Almost    Feb 14 - Mar 17, 2012

Opening Reception: Thursday, February 16th, 5:30 – 7:30pm

Davidson Contemporary is excited to announce a new solo exhibition with the artist collective, Ghost of a Dream. This is their first solo show with Davidson Contemporary. Ghost of a Dream uses a wide array of media in their work, as disparate as discarded scratch-off tickets and television sets which aims to “embody the essence of opulence while being constructed of materials that typically end up in the trash.”

Ghost of a Dream’s collages of losing lotto scratchers can vary in size from one to twelve feet across. The designs resemble ornate rugs or mosque mosaics – each tiny segment is laid down individually to give the overall appearance of interlocking forms. The effect from afar is a perfectly symmetrical woven pattern. However, on closer inspection, the viewer is privy to the individual rubbings of the original ticket holder – a signature of the once hopeful player whose dreams of winning were tossed aside with the spent ticket.

The exhibition will include two installations, works on paper, sculpture, and collages. The materials used vary from tens of thousands of scratch-off tickets to television sets, and from pen and paper to old trophies. Ghost of a Dream have exhibited work in China, Denmark, England, Germany, Italy, and Switzerland. Most recently, they showed with Davidson Contemporary at the Pulse Miami Art Fair. In 2012, they will have solo exhibitions at both the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center and the Hunterdon Art Museum in New Jersey. They are one of SmackMellon’s 2011 Hot Picks and are currently in residence at the Bemis Center in Omaha, NE, until March 2012.

Founded in 2006, Davidson Contemporary is a division of Maxwell Davidson Gallery. Under the direction of Maxwell Davidson IV and Charles C. Davidson, Davidson Contemporary presents the work of both emerging and mid-career artists who work in a broad range of media.
