Danese is pleased to announce its first exhibition of work by Shirley Kaneda, which opens to the public October 5 and continues through November 3rd.
The exhibition consists of eight large scale oil paintings – elegant, dynamic works consisting of biomorphic imagery within open areas of brilliant white and vivid color. In her dialogue with Lilly Wei, in the catalogue accompanying the exhibition, Kaneda comments: My interest lies in how form, line and color construct a certain kind of space, but not necessarily one that's logical. It might be retrograde to even speak about a figure/ground relationship, but I'm interested in subverting the logic of it....I want to imagine a space that is more unknown–more illogical, unstable. To me, this kind of activated space metaphorically represents a world in flux.
Kaneda explores how paint which is fluid can make itself look as if it were a representation of itself... how fluidity can be represented as abstract form, without the ‘expressionistic.’ I don't want the material to look as if it was poured, splashed and moved around the canvas. She renders the appearance of fluidity, not by spraying or pouring, but by painstaking and deliberate brushwork. Asked by Wei if her insistent slowness, and meticulous, willful, even fierce, sense of craft translates, through visual intensity, into emotional intensity, Kaneda replied: Yes. For me, it's another way to be expressive, one that is less conventional. I want to evoke visual pleasure, beauty, humor, ambiguity, paradox, surprise, and they are all emotional to me.
Shirley Kaneda was born in Tokyo in 1951, and moved to New York in 1970 where she received her BFA from Parsons. She is the recipient of awards from the Pollock Krasner Foundation and the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation among others. Her work is included in major collections throughout the United States and abroad. Shirley Kaneda lives and works in New York.
