Julio Rondo: ‘Miles from Here’    Oct 11 - Oct 29, 2011

Rondo uses a distinctive painting technique, which involves spray-painting many layers of acrylic lacquer on the reverse side of glass, whilst adding a further layer of paint on board behind. A space exists between the layers, creating a three-dimensional perspective to paintings such as ‘We may end up miles from here’ (illustrated above). This space draws the viewer in to the painting, giving our imaginations the freedom to fill the gap. Rondo explores notions of meta memory: his layers of paint are like memories or thoughts, some which rise sharply to the surface, others that exist in layers softly in the background, such as another painting: ‘You remind me of Something’.

Born in 1952 in Sontrondio, Spain, Julio Rondo emigrated to Germany in 1962. As well as maintaining his own visual practice, he is Professor of Visual Communications at Merz Academy, Stuttgart. In the last few years he has exhibited extensively around Europe, including Filter (Adam Gallery, London & Bath, 2009), Comb your hair with water and go to church, (Galerie Bendana-Pinel Art Contemporain, Paris, 2008) and You know, I know, (Galerie Andreas Binder, München and Galeria Sala Pelaires, Palma de Mallorca, 2007).
