This special selection of Polaroids for the exhibition were recently re-discovered by William Wegman as he was organizing his studio. As he opened each box of 24” x 20” Polaroids, he was met with images of Fay Ray and Batty, the second generation of his Weimaraners, as well as particular props that reminded him of the experience of making the photographs. Many of the props included furniture with a distinct mid-century modern feel to them, and this exhibition highlights these images and showcases the classic lines and minimalist feel of that time period and design sensibility. The current popularity of shows like Mad Men has led to a resurgence of interest in mid- century modern design, bringing the iconic looks of designers such as Hans Wegner and Eero Saarinen to the attention of a much broader contemporary audience of fans as well as lifelong enthusiasts.

Looking back on these Polaroids with new eyes allowed Wegman to consider how things are different today with the use of digital media. Now that the Polaroid film is no longer being produced, these images have become a record of one of the most unique, and immediate forms of photography – a bit of magic in every capture. The Polaroid photograph is both timeless and “of that time”, just as mid century modern design can be vintage or contemporary in it’s classic, elegant, and clean lines. A William Wegman Polaroid is continually appealing and an Eames chair will always look sophisticated, standing the test of time as an icon.
