Tepper Takayama Fine Arts is pleased to exhibit online the photography of New York-based, New England educated, Miska Draskoczy. His Gowanus Wild Series, featured in a mini-exhibition on artnet.com on the gallery’s homepage: http://www.artnet.com/galleries/home.asp?gid=143415.

A thoughtful and provocative multi-media artist Draskoczy is at this point in his career first and foremost a photographer. (He has been enamored of the medium since he was 14). He has created, produced and participated in a variety of individual and group projects including a send-up of politics and international organizations per se, engaged with science-fiction and the surreal, and socio-political quasi-documentary work filming a variety of people in their own habitats as they reflect on the most significant items in their surroundings and their lives. His multi-faceted works have been exhibited internationally and have garnered awards in various disciplines.

Most recently the FEATURED work-in-progress, "Gowanus Wild," was in a three month outdoor exhibition called the "THE FENCE at PHOTOVILLE 2013." It is the product of two years of principally solitary work, done most often at night, in the Gowanus Canal area, a patch of land and length of water in Brooklyn, NY, with a menacing history, lacking in aesthetic or romantic qualities. The pigments of the images as photographed range from solemn and murky to the brightness of a box of Crayolas. Almost nothing, with the exception of the candy colored "Snow Palace," has any pretension to beauty.

The result of Draskoczy's idiosyncratic composition and presentation, however, are scenes of sometimes even haunting or nostalgic appeal. He creates handsome images from urban detritus, as he transforms the overlooked, the mundane, the abandoned and the cliché along with abused, scarred landscape into compositions intense in their beauty. Even in the absence of people, these images reflect social anomie! This online exhibition serves as an introduction to a new view of 21st century urbanism.
