We are pleased to announce the first solo exhibition of Melissa Meyer
at Lennon, Weinberg following her inclusion in recent group shows in
2006 and 2008. The exhibition will include three large paintings along
with six medium and smaller sizes.
Several years ago, Melissa Meyer was offered a residency at Bogliasco
in Italy, during which she made a series of watercolors that mark the
beginning of a new phase in her work. The paintings that followed
featured radiant and contrasting colors applied in organized layers
that translated the wet]over]dry and wet]into]wet technique natural
to watercolor into the robust medium of oil paint. With these new
paintings, Meyer has brought the full potential of this approach to
fruition.
She establishes a base layer in a range of warm, sheer colors and with
a wide, supple brush distributes looping knots of gestures in stronger,
brighter colors. Whether confined to adjacent spaces or overlapping,
each translucent color retains its brilliance and hue. Together the fluid
marks establish a dynamic framework across the expanse of the
canvas.
An expert printmaker, the exhibition will also include work from a
new series of monotypes made with watercolor. Meyer created a work
for the Lincoln Center print series last year and previously published
two etchings with the Metropolitan Museumfs Mezzanine Gallery.
A survey exhibition of Meyerfs work was presented at the List Gallery,
Swarthmore College and at the Selby Gallery at Ringling College of Art
and Design in 2007, and a traveling show seen in 2006 at the New
York Studio School focused on the black and white works on paper she
made between 1984 and 1994. She showed previously at Holly
Solomon Gallery and at Elizabeth Harris Gallery. In addition to
numerous other grants and awards, she received the Rome Prize in
1980. Work by Melissa Meyer is included in the collections of the
Museum of Modern Art, the Metropolitan Museum, the Brooklyn
Museum, the Neuberger Museum, and the Rose Art Museum.
