New Acquisitions: European Paintings, Watercolors, Drawings and Sculpture 1780 - 1960 Oct 15 - Dec 15, 2009
This year's Fall Exhibition reflects Shepherd Gallery's expertise in late 18th- to early 20thcentury
European sculpture. Three exceptional sculptures by George Minne anchor the
exhibition. Accompanying these sculptures are Albert-Ernest Carrier-Belleuse’s silver patinated
Diana Victorious; Antoine Etex’s exquisite marble Virginie; James Pradier’s finely
cast Hebe; David d’Anger’s patriotic bronze Liberty; Christophe Fratin’s playful anthropomorphic
sculptures; Jean-Jacques Feuchère’s rare grotesque nymph; and Fritz Behn’s
expressive bust of Albert Schweitzer. A newly discovered portrait by Theodor Hildebrandt
depicts the sensitive young Prince Georg of Prussia, a patron of the arts in Düsseldorf.
Highlighting our works on paper are Peter Samuelson’s simple, elegant line drawings of
handsome lads that anticipate David Hockney’s style and subject matter, and Emile
Schuffenecker’s portrait study of Odilon Redon for a journal cover. Lastly, a sad tale of
intolerance described in the catalog entry for the Kohn Brothers, ends in hope in the
entries for the great humanitarians Sabine Zlatin (Yanka) and Albert Schweitzer.
