After Classical Portraiture    May 4 - Jul 7, 2012

Opening Reception: Friday, May 4, 5:00 – 7:30 pm

Often when one thinks of the Flemish Masters of the 17th Century, names such as Johannes Vermeer or Rembrandt van Rijn come to mind. But what about the contemporary Masters of the technique that is so historically favored? Schneider Gallery is pleased to present for the first time Lydia Panas, Joyce Lopez, Barbara Ciurej and Lindsay Lochman and Mark Thomas. Each of these talented artists has incorporated the Flemish style into contemporary works of art.

Lydia Panas’ portraits are done in the classical style. In each image, a single subject presents either meat, vegetables, fruit or cake. As you look at the images, it is unclear whether the individual admires or abhors their gift.

Joyce Lopez uses a macro lens to examine vegetables that rest on black backgrounds. The vegetables are lit in such a way that they become portraits and specimens for scientific studies that lead to a world of wonder.

Barbara Ciurej and Lindsay Lochman have been collaborating on photographs for over 30 years. In their series, Natural History, the photographs are, “blends of art, science and history through the portrait”, where the old meets the new. Ciurej and Lochman seamlessly fuse together cyanotypes and digital prints as a means of evanescence.

Mark Thomas presents iconic portraits of the Indian people. Each year, Thomas travels to India to capture sacred festivals and celebrations. During that time, he is able to connect with his subjects and photograph them in a way that is timeless.

Please join us as we admire 21st Century photographers who are influenced by the everlasting style of the Flemish Master painters.
