This set of drawings was initiated by coming across a photograph of a man sitting in the hold of a small boat reading; a book, a letter, or perhaps a diary. He was sitting on a bench; there was a wooden table in front of him, a single bed in the corner. There was a ladder going up on deck and on the floor there was a bucket with a rope attached. The man was wearing a cap.
This was my kind of space: made of wood, sparse with all the tools for depth-diving. The drawings were made quite fast (for me) two a week, over about nine months.
I let my unconscious guide me; initially the images were familiar and then after a few weeks the bucket dropped to a new depth, new images emerged, new creatures, new relationships. In the hold-space of the drawings, the instrument of exploration, as well as the stories, became one.
