omoo Hamada will be present.
Following upon Pucker Gallery’s first presentation of Hamada: Three Generations in 2009, Pucker Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition of new works by the three generations of Hamada: Shoji (1894-1978), Shinsaku (1929- ) and Tomoo (1967- ). We have recently acquired truly spectacular pieces by Shoji Hamada, some of which have not been seen in over 50 years, and are thrilled to be able to present them in this exhibition.
Like so many others in the pottery community of Mashiko, Japan, the Hamada workshop (directed by Shinsaku Hamada) and Mashiko Sankokan (the Hamada reference museum) were badly damaged as a result of the March 11th earthquake. Out of 45 wood-burning kilns in the entire village, only 5 remain intact. The community has united and worked out a firing rotation so every potter can continue to work. The Mashiko Pottery Fund (established by Pucker Gallery and Mudflat Studio in late March) has raised over $60,000 to help aid the rebuilding of kilns and reestablishing of potteries and workshops in Mashiko.
