French Impressionists and the School of Paris    Mar 17 - Apr 15, 2011

Peter Harrington is pleased to announce an exhibition of original signed prints and drawings by the most significant artists who worked in Paris, indicative of the centrality of that city to the history of Western art for the greater part of the 20th century.

We have examples from the French Impressionists such as Cézanne and Renoir, with the bulk of the show consisting of the School of Paris, the continuously evolving movement which flourished from the 1900s to the 1970s.

Picasso is generally acknowledged as the leading artist of the period. We have several examples of his oeuvre from the 1920s until his death 50 years later. Among the most spectacular and desirable are a group of his colour linocuts. There are also several pieces from the 1930s Vollard Suite. His later period is represented by the erotically-charged 347 series.

We have representative works by the main artists from the group: Georges Braque, co-founder of Cubism; Henri Matisse’s spectacular profiles and nudes from the 1920s; some interesting drawings by Jean Cocteau; Marc Chagall’s dream-like figures floating in the air; colourful abstracts by Joan Miró; the surrealistic landscapes of Salvador Dalí; and many others.
