Merry Karnowsky Gallery is also proud to present The Cure a solo exhibition by MM, a.k.a. Maxim of the UK Band, The Prodigy. MM’s art is engaging and transcendental, a brave balancing act between the poles of creativity and destruction.

In most of his paintings, storms rage over primordial scenes, where teetering pillars of jet-black rock rise dizzyingly skyward. Their inhabitants are mystical and at times grotesque; in a playful nod to Dali, humanoid butterflies with skull heads and neon patterns brandish samurai swords and swirl in the sky like angry valkyries. His other subjects feel more resonantly ancient, like long forgotten pagan gods, left in the dark after their worship has dried up. In Untitled, mountains of skulls melt together and weep neon spray paint stalactites.

The skull theme is important to MM and plays out in his many tattoos. “I don’t associate skulls with being evil. I associate it with being part of you, internal structure... beautiful.”

MM’s materials range from acrylic paint, spray paint, and mixed media on wood board finished with thick layers of glassy and sometimes metallic resin. Combining each component seamlessly into a practiced style, bright and daring colors dominate and draw strength from their muted settings. All his work is created in dark, enclosed spaces. “I never open the blinds. I paint with the door closed. It’s just dark. One get the sense from his work that the process is more meditative than confining, and that a keen sharpening of visual perception emerges as a result.

MM is a founding member of the band The Prodigy and a burgeoning visual artist. Staring off he worked with other artists across Europe and the United States, gaining insights and developing the striking technique now evident in his paintings. In 2011, he had his debut exhibition at the I.N.C. Space in Covenant Garden London. Since then his work has been featured in the Times, the Guardian and many other publications.
