SIDNEY MENKES    Apr 13 - Apr 27, 2013

Opening with the artist in attendance
Saturday April 13 from 2:00 to 5:00 pm

About the exhibition: For his second solo exhibition at Galerie Valentin, Sidney Menkes shows more than twenty recent paintings, oil canvases framed with round or oval precious wood frames. The Children in Nature Series, motivated by the beauty of Nature and the artist's childhood souvenirs, was a logical evolution in Sidney's mind. Five years ago, an earlier series, The Children's Toy Series, featured antique children's toys (toys that were actually preserved by the artist). The paintings exhibited this Spring at Galerie Valentin show "playful situations with children in natural settings imbued with stories or fairy tales" as mentioned by art critic Robert Bernier in the recent Parcours Magazine. "Menkes uses a pictorial approach that appears to come from a different era, as if time was suspended". The artist goes into enough details, though without excess, and some elements are painted with more freedom that it appears at first sight.

About the artist: Born in Montreal in 1943, Sidney Menkes studied art with Sara Dickinson and Adam Sherrif Scott from 1956 to 1958. In 1959, he attented the École des beaux-arts in Montreal before leaving in 1961 for Mexico to study Aztec art. In 1963, he studied graphic etchings with Moe Reinblatt at the Montreal Museum of fine arts, and graphic design with Alan Harrison at Sir George Williams University. Sidney works with oil on canvas as well as carbon pigment on paper. Each painting is framed with precious wood, made by a craftsman. The artist has been exhibiting in Montreal since 1960, and with Galerie Valentin since the Fall of 2007.
